Transpersonal psychotherapy focuses on mind-body relations, spirituality, consciousness and human transformation. It uses positive influences as a model for the realization of human potential- the study of human growth and development. This technique encourages a person to see their inner capabilities and view themselves as in the process of reaching their potential.
The transpersonal model is a holistic model that integrates the spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, physical and creative being into one complete element and addresses the six components equally for the purpose of treatment. To facilitate healing and growth, transpersonal therapy places great emphasis on honesty, open-mindedness, and self-awareness on the part of the therapist as well as that of the client.
It identifies and studies the various states of consciousness (including subconscious and superconscious) and asserts that each has multiple layers within that hold their own realities and systems.
The idea is that we are more than just our minds and bodies, but we are also composed of intangible or transcendent factors that make up our whole person. Just as our minds and bodies sometimes require treatment, our spirituality and other intangible aspects of ourselves often require a healing of sort as well. A transpersonal therapist may draw from a variety of different religions and practices for tools and methods that can help explore various levels of consciousness and use spirituality as a guide through troubled times.
So, in treatment, in addition to talk therapy, I draw upon mindfulness practices, guided visualization, dreamwork, journaling, art, music, meditation, movement, breathwork and other techniques that can help you explore and deepen your relationship to self, your spiritual self, and create meaning in your life. With my guidance, you will find, build and expand on your inner strengths, inner world and resources to create a more whole, complete and balanced life with a healthier state of mind.
Transpersonal therapy is used to treat anxiety, depression, addictions, phobias and other mood and behavioral problems as well as trauma. Those who are open to exploring their spiritual side, becoming more spiritually aware or finding a spiritual path, or who are having trouble finding meaning in their lives may benefit from transpersonal therapy.
